Open-mic tryouts, and the age check nobody wanted to guess
Our branch library runs a monthly open-mic for neighborhood writers and musicians. Last week the volunteer desk had a new problem: two short sets, one mostly teens, one mostly adults, and a signup sheet that only asked for a first name.
Nobody wanted to guess ages out loud at the door. A librarian who runs the teen podcast club suggested a quick recorded check instead of an awkward question. Volunteers could hear the clip privately, note a rough age band, and place people on the right set without making a scene.
We used a free voice age test on a quiet side computer so the check stayed optional and private. The clip never left the room; we deleted it after the seating chart was done.
The teens stayed with the teens, the adults stayed with the adults, and the open-mic started on time. Boring logistics, but that was the point.
